the shock felt around the internet

In Memoriam: Andrew Breitbart (1969-2012)

"With a terrible feeling of pain and loss we announce the passing of Andrew Breitbart.

Andrew passed away unexpectedly from natural causes shortly after midnight this morning in Los Angeles.

We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior.

Andrew lived boldly, so that we more timid souls would dare to live freely and fully, and fight for the fragile liberty he showed us how to love.

Andrew recently wrote a new conclusion to his book, Righteous Indignation:

I love my job. I love fighting for what I believe in. I love having fun while doing it. I love reporting stories that the Complex refuses to report. I love fighting back, I love finding allies, and—famously—I enjoy making enemies.

Three years ago, I was mostly a behind-the-scenes guy who linked to stuff on a very popular website. I always wondered what it would be like to enter the public realm to fight for what I believe in. I’ve lost friends, perhaps dozens. But I’ve gained hundreds, thousands—who knows?—of allies. At the end of the day, I can look at myself in the mirror, and I sleep very well at night.
Andrew is at rest, yet the happy warrior lives on, in each of us."

Andrew Breitbart dead at 43
Breitbart's website, bigjournalism.com, announced Thursday he died of natural causes in Los Angeles in the early morning hours. His death was confirmed by breitbart.com editor-in-chief Joel Pollak, who said he was at the hospital, and by the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Breitbart was walking near his house in the Brentwood neighborhood shortly after midnight Thursday when he collapsed, his father-in-law Orson Bean said.

Someone saw him fall and called paramedics, who tried to revive him. They rushed him to the emergency room at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, Bean said.

Breitbart had suffered heart problems a year earlier, but Bean said he could not pinpoint what happened.

"I don't know what to say. It's devastating," Bean told The Associated Press.

Larry Dietz, watch commander at the Los Angeles County coroner's office, said a cause of death was unknown and an autopsy would "more than likely" be conducted.

Breitbart is survived by his wife Susannah Bean Breitbart and four children.

Sick stuff: Liberals celebrate death of Andrew Breitbart

I am just stunned. Shocked.
I thought it was a hoax.
Gone too soon.
RIP Andrew Breitbart

We are all stunned and saddened by the news of Andrew Breitbart’s passing. Andrew was a warrior who stood on the side of what was right. He defended what was right. He defended the defenseless.

It is so sad to consider his four young children who have lost their dad. All our prayers are with his family now. May God comfort his wife and children.

Many of us will have life-long memories of our work or encounters with Andrew. May we draw on those to help forward the cause of fighting for what is right. For me, just one of those memories was in Pella, Iowa, last year after the premier of “The Undefeated.” Andrew held court in the restaurant at the local hotel talking about his favorite topic: how “culture is upstream of politics” and how conservatives must be unafraid to fight the leftwing media, cultural, and political establishments. The loss of his voice in this fight will be deeply felt, but thankfully his work lives on at his “Bigs,” and thank God for his inspiration and leadership.

God bless you, Andrew. Rest in peace, friend. We will continue the fight.

  1. Thanks for posting such a wonderfully conclusive tribute to Andrew. I am surprised about how saddened I am by his death, it seems as if he still had so much work to do but I'm sure his legacy will be long lived, I know I'll never forget him even though I didn't know him. Thanks again :)

    1. You're welcome. It was such a shock. I still can't believe it. Although, I must say, I don't miss the hundreds of hate tweets he retweeted from all the people who hated him. They stressed me out. Such hate and vitriol lobbed at him... He will be missed by all who knew him, and supported him.

  2. Sara,
I came expecting nothing less from you; to show support for that guy in his passing.

That mean S.O.B. who destroyed the career of that woman was uncalled for and I was not surprised by her compassionate comment to the news of his death. And the things he tweeted about Ted Kennedy death were a perfect example of what Breitbart was all about. I did not like the man and in fact, I really feel the same about him as I do Rush Limbaugh. Despicable humans, they are/were.

So despite all that...I feel for his family and his children. I hope his family can grieve privately in peace for this very public man. Even though I disagreed with everything he believed, RIP. 43 is young.

    Cheers,

  3. He didn't destroy her career. He posted her comments, including her come to jesus moment that what she was doing was wrong. Her EMPLOYER was wrong to fire her, without speaking to her. THEY destroyed her career. She was wrong when she treated the white farmers with racism - which she did. She did, however, realize she was wrong. And that was included in the original tape.

I didn't agree with his tweets about Kennedy, but then again, Kennedy did leave a woman to die, and did nothing to help her. He covered his ass, is what he did. And those tweets are not at all about what he was "all about". And so says the many, many, many people, friend and foe alike, who knew him.

Breitbart was not despicable, at all.

"His only displays of intolerance were against intolerance, whether that intolerance be of race, class, sexual orientation, education level, experience, intelligence, or all of the above."
